An indication of how times have changed is that a lot of my prestige appointments are advised by telephone. I'm not old enough (really I'm not) to remember when all communication for referees was in written (letter) format. Now we send our cautions/dismissals by e-mail, receive fixtures by e-mail and get really plum appointments advised by phone.
I got two phone calls this week. Firstly AC called from the County FA to ask if I would be an Assistant for a FA Women's Premier League game between Leeds United and Everton. This would be my third appointment for a FAWPL game this season. Bearing in mind that Leeds United have always been my team since the early 70s (and they are really nice girls who enjoy their football - with a great Secretary, Sue Walton) and Everton have the current England Captain in their ranks, the lovely Rachel Unitt, I couldn't say no. So on May 3 (next Thursday) I'll be turning out at Garforth Town FC to wave my flag for these two teams.
The second call was from CS, Appointments Secretary of the West Yorkshire Association Football League which is the Supply League (highest level of Amateur football) in this County. I had some fixture changes confirmed and then out of the blue he told me I was appointed as an Assistant for the League's Cup Final. Well I was very pleased to say the least. So now on May 5 I'll be waving my flag for some of the best amateur players in West Yorkshire on their big day out.
