The season that nearly got away

I made an appearance as 4th official at the District Sunday Cup Final this morning.

The Fat Lad was refereeing and had excellent support from his two Assistants, both teams behaved themselves (apart from the one that collected 4 cautions) and the team promoted as Division One Champions hammered the Premier Division team, Old Pack Horse, 4-1 after racing away to a 3-0 lead by half time and then sitting back. The Fat Lad had a very good game and it's easy to see why it's being recommended he trains to pass his fitness test and get up to level 4.

I'd seen the winning team, West End United 2 weeks ago when they had dismantled another Premier team 9-0 (after 80 minutes when I left the ground it was only 6-0) and they had a player who I understand turns out occasionally at semi-pro level who ran the show that day and left the field after 80 minutes today to a standing ovation from the 1-200 people there.

I finished my season off properly as well with some good management of the winning team's manager, substitutes and hangers-on, instead of the limping out I did nearly three weeks ago at Carlton. It would be fair to say that the manager and I haven't always (ever???) seen eye-to-eye but today we both accepted the occasion was bigger than any spats which have occurred in the past between us.

I also managed for the fifth season in succession to pick up a momento of an honour appointment. This season's one looks like this ...
