Wembley

I've been to Wembley, the old one, four times. First time I went I saw Leeds Rugby League team come back from 10-0 down to beat St Helens 14-12 (?) in 1978.

The second time I went to Wembley I saw my beloved Leeds United beat Liverpool in what used to be called the Charity Shield. This is a pre-season game played between the winners of the league and the winners of the FA Cup. In 1992, Leeds won the league and when they took on Liverpool in August that year they beat them 4-3 in a classic game.

In 1996 I made two trips to Wembley. The first saw me sitting dishevelled on the back row of the stand after watching Leeds capitulate 3-0 to an average Aston Villa side in the Coca Cola Cup Final in March. Three months later I saw Germany beat the Czech Republic in the final of Euro 96 with Oliver Bierhoff scoring a "Golden Goal" to bring Germany back from the dead.

Last night Leeds United beat Carlise in the second leg of the League One play-off semi-final. They did this following a 2-1 defeat at Elland Road on Monday night. On Monday, Carlisle played Leeds off the park. Last night the roles were slightly reversed. Goals from local boy, Johnny Howson, in the 10th and 91st minute saw Leeds win 3-2 on aggregate. So on May 25th, they will face the winners of tonight's game between Doncaster Rovers and Southend United at Wembley with the winners of that game being promoted to the Championship (old Division 2).

I'm away next week when the tickets go on sale so I'm using other means to try to get a ticket for Wembley ...
