Sometimes it's nice when something I forecast comes true and other times, it's not good.
I said after Switzerland's defeat to the Czech Republic and Austria's defeat to Croatia that the host nations' interest in the competition might have evaporated by Friday morning. Switzerland became the first team to be eliminated from the competition when they lost 2-1 to Turkey.
The Swiss had led at half time when Hakan Yasin had side footed the ball into the Turkish goal from 5 yards. The first half was played in appalling conditions as the rain fell in sheets. Puddles developed all over the field of play and the ball was sticking instead of rolling. Fortunately the conditions improved near the end of the half and the field drained quite well, with the help of the ground staff, before the second half kicked off.
Turkey equalised in the second half and won the game with a goal in added time. I read a description of the Swiss and Austrian teams yesterday which likened them to the geeky kids who invite all the cool kids around to their parents house for a party in the hope that they will pull some attractive girl from the "in" crowd. The Swiss have just crashed and burned and now have to watch the cool kids drink all their beer and go skinny dipping in the pool ... Switzerland 1-2 Turkey
