Training XXXII

With the District Cup looming large this weekend (I have a game tomorrow afternoon), Fat Lad and I decided we should train but not too hard. He has a bad knee and I felt a twinge in my right calf and left lower hamstring.

Titfer declined our invite citing a really bad week, so he felt he had earned a session in the local pub. So the illustrious duo did their warm up lap and shuttles and decided on a nice easy high intensity session of 12 minutes running, a rest period of up to 10 minutes followed by another 12 minutes running. Sounds easy? If only ...

The first 12 minutes passed without too much incident apart from our lapping the little children from the gymnastics club who were on their warm up runs and dodging the older ones practising their shot putting technique. We managed a reasonable pace and finished around 2080m. That's not too shabby considering neither of us were pushing particularly hard and the pace was comfortable for all but the last lap.

Our rest was a bad idea as we stood around watching the junior athletics stars practising their javelin throws which meant we seized up a little. When it came to the second 12m run we set off again at a decent pace and clocked up the first 1000m in around 5m40s which meant we were on course to equal our first distance but then I got cramps in both hamstrings, so had to stop. Fat Lad stopped too and we walked 100m before setting off again. This time I lasted 300m before the cramps started again. With the local junior cycle club gathering at the track edge, we called it a day, did our warm down and scuttled off home.
