Training XXXIX

The weather forecast for this evening was for temperatures to fall below freezing and with the gusting northwesterly wind, the wind chill factor was to make it feel like it was around -6C ... not the weather for running around a track!

Nevertheless I kitted myself out with one underarmour thermal vest, one t-shirt, one long sleeved football shirt and one fleece ... I was training. Well, I was until Fat Lad reminded me that he had friends/family staying with him for the weekend, Zico was looking forward to training (she was injured last weekend and this was her comeback) and Titfer had disappeared off the face of the earth again!

I decided that discretion was the better part of valour and headed for home ... only to collect my gym pass and lose a couple of layers. For the first time since the end of June I headed for the local sports centre. One of the outcomes of my medical tests undertaken following my palpitations back in February/March was that I was told not to try any form of weight training, so I was on a strict cardio-vascular workout.

I started with a gentle 5 minute run on the treadmill before starting a 1600m run in around 8 minutes (easier to run on a treadmill). After that I did some interval running but this was not speed then slow but flat then gradient running. the first gradient was only 2.0% and felt easy, they increased in intensity with the last 2 minutes being run on a 6.0% gradient which as hard work for my creaking legs.

I finished off with a jog, walk jog run to mimic our usual laps of the track before doing the full stretching out of all the major muscle groups in my legs (yes I did feel stupid). By the time I'd done, I'd managed to burn 827 calories with a 97% max and 81% average. Not too bad and they had the heating on!

P.S. Nothing against Zico, she's lovely, it's just that she can run me ragged lol
