So with a creaky hamstring and a happy Fat Lad we made our way to the track to test out my running.
The Fat Lad wasn't there so I set off on my first run for a few weeks and I felt ok. I did a fast warm-up lap and turned to see the Fat Lad chugging down the straight behind me. His game tomorrow seemed likely to be on and in the absence of a call from the groundsman at my game, it seemed very likely that I'd be getting 90 minutes in as well.
I told him about the tweaks and he thought that his plan of 100m and 50m sprints was not the best idea for me. So after a nice long warm-up of shuttles we were set. Then we were collared by a little old man from the local council who wanted to know if we'd be long and if we had paid to use the track. The truth was that we usually piggy-backed on someone else's session whether it be the local athletics club, gymnastics club or cycling club, we'd never actually shelled out any pennies to use the track. We came clean and with a wry smile he let us stay out on the track but said we could pay next time.
So Fat Lad set off on his sprints while I decided to do a 12m run just to see how far I could get, with a trick hamstring and, since the warm-up, a spiking knee pain! The running didn't seem too troublesome and I cantered around the first 3 1/2 laps but then my breathing became laboured, my knee hurt and Fat lad kept asking me how much longer I was going to run for. So I did just under another 1 1/2 laps, so getting in about 1970m. This wasn't bad considering we haven't trained at all for 4 weeks and even then we haven't trained properly since the end of November.
During the warm-down I got a tightening in my left calf as I cramped up a little but on getting home a nice warm bath and a little bit of massage got rid of that. Calories 699, max hr 101% (oooh!) and average 80%. Not bad for a comeback with a trick hammy!!!
