I set myself the target of starting training today and although suffering a little from the after effects of a busy weekend of eating and drinking to excess I headed out to meet Fat Lad.
He was part way through his training and Mrs Fat Lad who is in training for a Race for Life event later this year, was also nearly finished. The initial plan had been to warm up, run for 12 minutes, rest and stretch for 10 minutes, run again for 12 minutes, warm down and go home.
I completed my warm up lap in around 3m30s which is about the fastest I have ever managed this distance. We were training on the same council playing fields we used all last summer (so no risk of being chased away by a local council employee as we were at the track back in March). I felt ok on the lap and my breathing was relaxed but my heart was beating a little fast.
I set off on the first run of 12 minutes but when my heart rate hit 100% of maximum and stayed there for a minute, I decided to change my programme. So I ran for 6 minutes, walked for 1 minute and repeated this same routine 3 more times giving me a total of 24 minutes work.
I did my warm down and stopped my monitor. I was pleased to see that I'd burned 1093 calories in 56 minutes with an average heart rate of 89% and a maximum of 102%. A very hard work out in very hot conditions. There will be plenty of time to do more before the fitness test and it begins on Wednesday
