A text arrived on my phone asking me about the arrival time and dress code for this game and I panicked.
As far as I was concerned the game was called off over two weeks ago and I had a free night at home. Bob assured me that the game was on and that Sunderland were bringing last season's U18 side, who were making up the bulk of their Reserve side for the new season. A mad dash home at lunch time saw me gather my kit, suit and boots before shooting off to Guiseley's ground arriving a little over 75 minutes before kick off.
Bob did a great job of keeping me calm and when we stepped out on the field I certainly felt a lot more relaxed than when I was assistant to his brother Andy for the game versus Halifax Town last season. I also felt reasonably comfortable throughout the game and my pace only flagged in the last 5 minutes or so.
It was an accomplished performance from the young professionals and despite having to work overtime on occasions to keep things under control, Bob did a great job. We only had one occasion when we threatened to cross on a throw in but I took his lead as per match instructions and things went smoothly. It was less straight forward for Tom on the opposite touchline as he had a penalty shout under his nose as well as the full complement of substitutions to cope with.
Even so, it was a good run out and burn of 1584 calories, max hr of 202% (misreading I'm sure) and an average of 75%
