All good things come to an end and this tournament was no exception.
The number and severity of moments of indiscipline reduced significantly on previous years and it may just be that the Respect message is getting through in junior football. The proof will be when these players move into open age, whether any noticeable changes become evident in the number of cautions, dismissals and disciplinary boards or whether things remain the same (or God forbid, worse!).
Today I was asked to look after the U14 semi-final being played at 11:30 and we had all sorts of weather from cloud to rain to sunshine. The game was similar as the players started playing fairly, not so fairly and things got a little naughty in between. The pre-match favourites eventually won comfortably but not before they were put through their paces by a talented team of opponents.
I had three cautions, had words with both management teams concerning encroachment and bowed out as a referee in this tournament burning 1032 calories, max hr86% and average 73%.
The afternoon saw me assist a young colleague as he took care of the U13 Cup Final. This game went to extra time as it was 2-2 at full time. The winner was scored with 4 minutes to play in the second half of extra time and to make victory more satisfying for the winners, they were from the estate on the far side of the railway track from the tournament venue. 572 calories, 72% max and 54% average.
So one souvenir photograph and two souvenir polo shorts later and I was all done and heading home!
