Sometimes you just know that you are going to have a fun day within a few minutes of meeting your referee. Today was one of those days ...
Stu picked me up at the agreed time at the agreed location and we chatted about all sorts of rubbish as we followed his satnav's instructions. As we passed through the centre of Leeds we approached a major road junction and the traffic lights turned to red. Stu and I just kept on talking as we were around 100m from the lights, but he didn't slow down. Instead he kept on going and we sailed through the lights, I cringed as the camera undoubtedly picked up his number plate and I waited for the impact from someone who actually had the right of way!
We arrived at the ground in one piece (somehow!) and after a while we became concerned as the other assistant hadn't turned up. Eventually his bag mysteriously appeared in our changing room while we were having a coffee in the clubhouse, but he was still nowhere to be found. He suddenly appeared and Stu got the pre-match completed before we undertook a very (very, very!) gently paced warm-up.
As for the game itself it remained a close contest until the home team scored their third goal. Stu had the game in his back pocket and then made a simple error regarding a stoppage and suddenly the tempo picked up requiring more involvement from all three of us. Stu issued a couple of deserved cautions, we had a shout for offside on the home team's fourth goal and we ended the game very, very warm.
My assessment arrived this morning and highlighted the same development point as the last one, so I guess I have a blindspot when it comes to this issue!!! Calories 1597 (highest for a line in a long time), max hr 93%, average 75%
