Back in the routine

No posts for nearly 4 weeks as I've packed in a few things ...

Went on holiday to Rhodes for two weeks, gave my daughter away at her wedding in Kalithea, attended her UK wedding reception, completed my first assessment of the season for a promotion candidate, attended an FA "Have Your Say" event at the County HQ, did a Supply League assessment, prepared for a new referees course starting on Monday and attended a Supply League Assessors training game in the sunshine.

Each one deserves their own post and I might get around to it later ... its nice to be back.

International Break

My start to the season has been stop-start with various family commitments meaning that I haven't been available on as many Saturdays as I would have liked. They also prevented me from attending Day 2 of a new referee's course back in the middle of August.

Professional footballers have suffered from this stop-start nature to their season for a number of years with the introduction of an international window in early September to allow for the playing of "friendlies" and qualifying games for international competitions such as the FIFA World Cup. It seems that the various federations around the world have recognised that no one wants to have an expensive Argentinian international in their team, if he's going to be unavailable for 6 games a season because of international duty and have synchronised their games and competitions to minimise the impact on the domestic competitions.

My own season is entering an international break as I am flying out to Rhodes next Thursday in readinness for my daughter's wedding. I'm trying to get back into training this evening for the last few sessions after my programme was blighted by illness and injury for the last few weeks. Expecting to be in pain tomorrow ...

Pay attention!

It seems that my retirement from refereeing has gone unnoticed in one corner of the world as I got a phone call tonight asking me to referee a pre-season game for a local side. I retired in December 2009!

The Secretary of the club was talking to me only a few weeks ago about how it was to be retired from the green stuff, as he is just about done with playing. His phone call came in near the start of the first Sunday League meeting of the new season. He should have been at the meeting so I politely declined his request and suggested he put in an appearance - he did and it saved him £20!

Preparations for the new season have gone reasonably well with the fixtures prepared through to the end of the season. Last night saw me make a brief appearance as a guest speaker at the local Referee's Association presenting the law changes for the forthcoming season. Nice to get back in the swing!

I'm now off duty for a weekend before getting in a couple of assessments before a longer break for my daughter's wedding in Rhodes on September 16. Can't wait!

Training 4.14

It's nearly here but not near enough ...

I submitted my first set of closed dates for next season and there seemed to be a lot! It's no surprise as we struggle with trying to cover school holidays as well as ensure we have enough time to go on holiday on Rhodes for my daughter's wedding. Add in a family trip to Alton Towers and my in-law's Ruby Wedding anniversary party and there's not a lot of August and September left.

So it looks like my assessing season will not get off the ground properly until October unless I take on a lot of midweek games, which will interfere with my training programme, which is going nicely thank you! We started a little earlier tonight and having tried out 2 minutes running, 1 minute walking on Friday, I thought the boys might like to try that as well.

I wanted to work a little harder than on Friday so we did a 5 minute warm up run, shuttles and then 3 sets of 5 rotations of 2 minutes running and 1 minute walking. After the first 5 we added an extra minute to the rest and then switched back to 1 minute rests. In between run 7 and 8 we stretched the rest to 1m 30s to get some water on board but reverted back to 1 minute walks. When we had completed 10 we again had a 2 minute rest. For runs 11 through to 15, we took 1 minute rests again.

We skipped the jog/run warm down and went straight into our stretches and then headed home. I think on Wednesday we're going to have to revert to far, middle and near as the field will be jampacked with football teams getting ready for the new season which is still too far away!

Training 4.1

Also known as back in the saddle.

My wife went on a diet recently to kickstart getting trim so she looks good on my daughter's wedding photographs in September (it was very successful too!). With the same thought in mind I decided I would begin training again. I never thought it would be so tough and yet so easy.

I met with James and Paul on the field we've used for the last 3 years and set up a simple exercise. After a warm up lap and shuttles, we ran at a pace which gave our hearts, legs and lungs an introductory workout. We ran for 6 minutes, walked for 3 minutes, ran for 5 minutes (my mistake as I miscalculated when we should stop) walked for 3 minutes, ran for 6 minutes 15 seconds, walked for 3 minutes and ran for 6 minutes.

I was keeping a careful eye on my heart rate monitor as I wasn't wanting to take a chance on blowing a gasket. My monitor showed I was working a lot harder than I felt I was so I kept my pace even and slow but still was ticking over between 95 and 100% of my maximum. I got through even though both James and Paul lapped me and I'm looking forward to a slow steady build up in my fitness over the next 3 months.

I'm not wanting to do backflips down the aisle with Sam, but I do want to make sure I don't get harpooned by a passing whaler when I venture on to the beach!
