Making a difference

I received a text on my way to my game at Otley yesterday asking me to help out at a 5-a-side tournament at Batley Sports Centre. The text came from Adrian Holmes who was recently promoted to Level 3 in refereeing. I'm pleased for Aidy as he works hard at being as good as he is.

Anyway it turns out the tournament was part of the Your Game series organised between the BBC and the Football Foundation. The tournaments are an attempt at getting underprivileged kids interested in sport, especially football and using that interest to benefit themselves and the community in which they live.

I really enjoyed myself refereeing around a dozen games, including the men's final and all of these games were played in a very good spirit. I'd like to make special mention of the Bradford Princes Trust guys who won the final. I'm not sure all of their players fitted the 16-25 target age group but they conducted themselves well all day. Another special thank you to Danny Mills, ex-Leeds United and currently Manchester City Player for driving a total of 3 hours to participate. Autograph signing, match commentary and prize presentation are some of the things that Danny did today. Calling me some names was another!

Some wicked sunburn, very dedicated youth support people and of course all the players made today very special ... thank you!
