Training XXXVI

Fat Lad fresh from his trip to a pub bonfire on Wednesday arrived as I was halfway through my warm up lap and Titfer arrived soon afterwards. Having trained twice already this week I wasn't sure I wanted to push myself too hard with two important games this weekend ... I didn't get a choice.

We started with another warm up lap to get the muscles warmed and the lungs expanded. I found breathing hard work because the air was cold and damp - what will we be like when we're training in February??? I led us through the shuttles, dodging the young athletes carrying javelins as we worked before Fat Lad made his suggestion for training ... single laps with 1 minute rests repeated 8 times with a 5 minute rest after 4 laps.

Seemed easy enough and they wanted to aim for a 2m20s target but I initially suggested 2m before agreeing to 2m15s. On the first lap we worked very hard and I finished in 1m48s. We took the rest of the second minute and our full minute rest before going again this time 1m50s and a 1m10s rest. The third and fourth laps were very hard and were both completed in 2m7s with a 53s rest in between.

Our 5m rest became a 5m23s rest to let my watch run around to a full minute (yes I know that's sad) and the next three laps were all 2m7s and a final one of 2m5s. That's much better than when I trained on my own 2 weeks ago. Calories 888 (taking my weekly total to 3020 calories and that's before the weekend's games), average 77% with a 97% max.

I was starving when I got home and treated myself to a huge bowl of porridge with honey squeezed on top. It certainly stuck to my ribs and kept me going until my wife's home made wholemeal loaf was baked. A couple of slices of that with low fat spread melted on top brought the week to a satisfactory end. Only 4 and half hours to kick off ... my first ever 3 p.m. kick off on a Saturday afternoon game!
