This morning could have gone so wrong but fortunately for me, the teams were well behaved and I had little to do. I picked up the game after Fat Lad had to give backword as he had been nicked to assist Chuckle Elder in a FA Sunday Cup game in Bradford.
Last night however Fat lad and I, together with Zico decided to have a night out to celebrate our training prowess. It went on for a very long time, I remember singing karaoke in two different bars and walking home just before 3 this morning. So to say I had a little bit of a hangover before the game was an understatement.
Some of the players looked like they had late nights as well and we started off a little slow. Fat Lad was on his way to the game and turned up about 15 minutes in. His first participation was to tell me I'd got a throw in wrong so I tried to turn it around by giving a foul throw but ended up annoying some of the players. Apart from that Fat Lad hadn't missed much and despite the hangover I was moving about the field pretty easily.
On 40 minutes everything seemed to happen at once. An outstretched foot flicked at an attacker bringing him down and I thought it was a caution so I gave it. A player from the same team objected too loudly and he got the game's second caution. Then his team went up the other end of the field and opened the scoring - 1-0!
Second half kicked off and everything was going smoothly before I had to issue another caution for dissent. This player wouldn't stop shouting and in the end I told his captain to sort him out before I sent him off.
I then missed a bad challenge, well not exactly missed, I was too close and looking through the offending player so I missed the actual contact, which apparently had been high on the player's side. The offending player added insult to injury a few minutes later by scoring an audacious lob from the left hand side of the penalty area.
His team increased the pressure and soon afterwards added what turned out to be the winning goal. The game petered out but with a few minutes to go, a player collapsed. He was ok after a few minutes and it may have been the after effects of his night out or something more serious. He eventually decided not to come back to the game, so his team played with 10 men and we ended at 2-1. The home captain had a long moan to me that I had been winding his players up and I had to admit I was baffled. I just let him rant and I stood there with a smile on my face, not taking offence at all.
A quiet drink back at the pub, home for a bite of lunch and then 2 hours sleep made me feel a little more human, but a good night's sleep will make all the difference I'm sure. It's the RA's Christmas meeting tomorrow, so it will be pie'n'peas all round to finish off a good year.
