Training 52

After Fat Lad's four games and my three games in two days we both had weary limbs but decided we needed to train to keep in the rhythm. Having just had trouble getting out of the chair to answer the telephone, it was a mistake, certainly on my part.

Having been chased from the local council's floodlit running track twice in the last few weeks, we decided that we would do some road running. I've been road running three times in the last 23 years and the last time was around 9 years ago. We did road running intensively in the summer months when I was a rugby league player and I always hated it. When I retired from that game through injury I only ran on roads a couple of times and the last of those was for Sport Aid back in 1986 when I ran 10K in 54 minutes.

So Fat Lad and I set off out of the local town centre, through the pedestrian arcade, past the lovely smelling curry house (mouth watering as I ran) and out past the police station. We headed down past the pub where we have both been guilty of "murdering" a few karaoke favourites and then on down past a couple of fish and chip shops (I don't think I've had fish and chips since last Easter!) to the main road at the bottom of the hill. We turned back up towards the town centre and this was where it really hurt as he went uphill on a nice steady incline for around three quarters of a mile.

I'll openly admit that I was hurting on this stretch and had to stop for around 15-20 seconds on a couple of occasions but it was either that or fall down. We pushed on up the hill back into the town centre, around into the pedestrianised area and back to the car park by the bus station. After less than a minute our pulses were back within the 70-75% of max range with mine having peaked at 95%. A few stretches and we were on our merry way home. I'd burned off 497 calories and averaged 81% and that was a good enough short session for me. Now if only my legs would agree ...
