I don't intend to return to active refereeing but I have piled on weight since hanging up my whistle, so I'm back in training to reduce my waistline. I was joined by Chris, James and Eddie and we did the usual warm up lap of the field, in fact I did two. We then launched into the usual shuttles for the remainder of the warm-up, all the time being gently washed by light drizzle.
I then set the lads off doing a simple high intensity session consisting of a run from the goal line to the edge of the near penalty area, back to the goal line, up to the half way line, back to the goal line and finally up to the opposite goal line and back to the start point. It measures around 280m and at an even pace, it certainly eased me back into the routine.
In fact I was thoroughly enjoying the work out, a lot more than Chris who retired gracefully about 3/4 of the way through. Eddie and James persevered and put in a good session. We finished with the usual jog/walk combination around the field a couple of times and wrapped things up with some stretches and then home for a welcome bath. The session lasted just over an hour and I burned 1000 calories. Average heart rate 147bpm. Clicking the image below shows the pattern of my heart rate across the exercise period.
