The phone rings

... and a familiar voice says, "Brian? It's Alan Carter at the County FA". We go through the usual pleasantries and then he asks me to do a County Challenge Trophy game from the 1st Round which should have taken place two weeks ago. Apparently the appointed referee was unable to keep his appointment so I now have the somewhat dubious honour of officiating at a game with the two teams. So Great Preston and Addingham Reserves, I will see you next Saturday!

It means I have to let my previous appointment of Ilkley Town vs Kippax Athletic (4th vs 2nd) in the League Cup go. I phoned Chris Spurr and he got back to me on Saturday. He wasn't happy but when the County FA pull rank, he has to let me go.

During the conversation with Alan he mentioned he'd put me on a FA Sunday Cup game at Liversedge on November 4th as an Assistant to Bob Madley. I like Bob and his brother Andy, they are good (great!) referees and have a very good careers ahead of them. The game involves the team who won the game I should have been on when I was injured. It's also the Second Round Proper and the furthest I have been in the competition so it's a great appointment.

Alan also mentioned I had a County Challenge Cup game for Saturday November 3rd. The appointment arrived on Saturday and I have Altofts and Oxenhope Recreation. I've seen Altofts before at the beginning of last season and they were a half decent side back then, so we'll see how they've progressed.
