Back on the physio's table on Thursday night and I've made good progress. I managed some of the exercises I was given last week and of course I've been in the gym.
So this time, she decided to test my running speed and muscle strength. I had to sprint the length of a small exercise room (around 30m) and back. The problem was my head wouldn't let me sprint, I could only do a 3/4 pace run. I then did some hopping and a few squat jumps. The physio had warned me last week that I might face a mental problem about sprinting again so soon after the injury. Although I felt a few twinges I think these might have been related to the weight training I did on Monday - it was a hard session and the muscles were still tired when I went in the gym after seeing the physio.
To be totally honest the leg felt ok but I didn't want to risk extending my three week lay off, so I took it easy. The pace I managed would be enough to manage a game in the middle and one with a flag in my hand, so I'm pleased with my progress. It seems to have been an eternity but it's only 23 days since the original injury and just over two weeks since I aggravated it, meaning I had to take time out.
I have one more session booked for next week and I think that will the last one. After that, it's just going to be a case of gaining match fitness. That starts tomorrow when I referee Lee Mount FC and Royal Hotel Kings Cross. Both teams are from the Ovenden area of Halifax and they are playing in the 1st round of the County Sunday Cup. Royal Hotel lost at the semi final stage last season to the eventual cup winners Elland FC. The manager, etc. were well behaved that day when I was 4th Offical, so I'm hoping that behaviour carries on for 90 minutes (and beyond if needed) tomorrow morning.
