Game 67

Another midweek game and another short trip along the A650 from work.

I got held up at work so left a little late and as a consequence my warm-up was a little rushed. The rain was coming down heavily all afternoon but eased off as we neared kick off time. The dark raincloud that hung over the ground for the first 15 minutes of the second half honestly made me think we might have to abandon.

It didn't happen and the home team gave the away team (top of the league and already in 2 Cup Finals) a good game and the fright of their life. I worked hard to stay in touch with play. The softer ground and lower temperature certainly made my life a lot easier than it had been on Sunday and despite running the game on my own I struggled to get my pulse up.

I had two players running on and taking shots at goal after they had been adjudged offside. I decided not to caution as both players assured me they hadn't heard the whistle. I took their word for it and saved my cautions for the truly reckless challenges.

The game had two own goals by the home team, accompanied by a genuine away team player's strike as well as two goals from the home team. I had 4 cautions, three for the away team for very similar challenges which were reckless to say the least. The home team also picked up a caution and their coach was dismissed for a comment he made after his team conceded the third goal.

I had a spate of handbags to resolve in the dying moments but the players were almost hugging each other in friendship once I had had a chat with them. Again it saved me a caution and I think I'm beginning to get the hang of this management lark.
